What you'll do:
As a Financial Accountant based in Auckland, you will play a pivotal role in managing key financial processes that underpin the organisation’s success. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve coordinating monthly account preparations, supporting audit reviews, assisting with annual budgets, and ensuring compliance reporting is completed accurately. You will maintain essential financial registers such as the chart of accounts and fixed asset register while preparing cash flow forecasts that inform strategic decisions. By liaising with business units on their monthly reports, you will foster strong connections across teams. Your oversight of treasury functions—including foreign exchange contracts—and monitoring bank reconciliations will ensure robust financial health for the group. Additionally, you will guide direct reports such as the Assistant Accountant in rebate administration while developing policies that reinforce internal controls. Success in this role requires attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and a commitment to nurturing a safe workplace culture through active participation in OH&S risk management initiatives.
* Coordinate the preparation of monthly accounts within agreed timelines, ensuring accuracy and completeness across all business units.
* Assist with half-year and full-year accounts, audits, and annual report preparation, contributing to robust financial reporting processes.
* Support the annual budget process by providing detailed financial analysis and assisting in the preparation of income tax schedules.
* Ensure all compliance reporting is completed promptly, maintaining adherence to regulatory requirements and organisational policies.
* Liaise with various business units to provide guidance on their monthly reports, fostering strong inter-departmental relationships.
* Complete all general ledger reconciliations monthly, maintaining meticulous records and supporting effective financial management.
* Maintain the chart of accounts and fixed asset register, ensuring data integrity and up-to-date information for decision-making purposes.
* Prepare daily and monthly cash flow forecasts, managing foreign exchange contracts, and administering treasury functions for the group.
* Monitor bank accounts closely, ensuring timely reconciliations and supporting efficient cash management practices.
* Oversee the Assistant Accountant to ensure rebate functions are administered efficiently, developing policies and procedures that uphold internal controls.
What you bring:
The ideal candidate for the Financial Accountant position brings proven experience in finance or commerce roles—ideally within retail environments—alongside demonstrated success managing teams. Your academic background includes an Accounting or Commerce degree complemented by CPA or Chartered Accountant credentials (or progress toward them). You are dedicated to ongoing professional development through regular industry seminar attendance. Your interpersonal skills shine through exceptional written and verbal communication abilities; these help you build trust quickly among colleagues. You are dependable when it comes to meeting deadlines thanks to strong time management capabilities. Your resourceful nature means you approach challenges collaboratively rather than independently, always seeking ways to improve systems for communal benefit. High ethical standards guide your actions as you review data thoroughly before making recommendations. You thrive in environments where teamwork is valued over individual achievement, bringing warmth, empathy, and sensitivity into every interaction.
* Successful completion of an Accounting, Commerce or Business degree provides you with a solid foundation for this role.
* CPA qualifications or progress towards completion—or Chartered Accountant status—demonstrate your commitment to professional excellence.
* Evidence of regular attendance at industry seminars (CPD) shows your dedication to ongoing learning and staying current with best practices.
* A minimum of three years’ experience in a financial or commerce role—preferably within retail—equips you with relevant industry knowledge.

* Exceptional written and verbal communication skills enable you to build rapport quickly with colleagues across departments.
* Proven time management skills allow you to meet deadlines consistently while balancing multiple priorities effectively.
* Ability to follow direction ensures alignment with organisational goals while contributing positively within a team environment.
* Resourcefulness paired with good initiative empowers you to solve problems collaboratively and drive improvements in processes.
* High ethical standards combined with thoroughness when reviewing data reflect your commitment to integrity and accuracy.
